Sixth-grader Ally Nickerson is clever, creative and particularly good at mathematics, but she struggles to read. She has become very good at hiding her difficulties from teachers and classmates. When Mr. Daniels becomes her teacher, he sees the intelligence and creativity beneath her disruptive behaviour and helps Ally understand that she learns differently.

As Ally gains confidence, she discovers the importance of friendship, kindness and accepting yourself. Along the way, the story explores learning differences, bullying, courage and the idea that intelligence can look very different from one person to another.
